11 Years Ago Today...November 24th
It was eleven years ago today that I saw John Prine play the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton.
And it was three years ago today that I saw Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar and Grady fame do a guitar clinic at the Varscona Hotel here in Edmonton. This show was advertised to be at Avenue Guitars, but when I went to the store there was a note saying it had been moved tot he hotel. The show was done in a small conference room with maybe 20 people there. A very cool intimate show to see.

Tedeschi Trucks Band in Edmonton Nov.12th 2013
On Tuesday night was back to back shows having seen Emmylou Harris the night before at the same venue, but on this night my buddy Hurl and I were at the Jubilee Auditorium to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band perform.
We missed the opening act The Walkervilles from Ontario, and from what I heard, we didn't miss much.
This was my second time seeing Tedeschi Trucks Band, and again another supreme outing by the eleven piece band, led by Derek Trucks on slide guitar and his wife Susan Tedeschi on vocals and guitar. The band is touring across Canada promoting their new album "Made Up Mind" which is a great album, but I find it to be a touch over produced, but live you couldn't ask for more. Susan can belt the tunes out like a cross between Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt, and what can you say about Derek Trucks on slide other then he is one of the best in the business. Derek seems to be a bit more comfortable on stage this time compared to the last time I saw them last summer. Derek actually faced the audience more this time and even smiled a few times. Susan was her usual energetic self smiling through out the show and looking like she was having a great time on stage.
TTB's two hour set was a mash up of southern blues, jazz, funk and soul music. With two drummers a keyboard player and five piece horn section the band was tight yet loose in a groovy way. Some of the tunes performed on this night were, "Made Up Mind" the title song from their latest release, an Elmore James cover "The Sky Is Crying", "Everybody's Talking" and "Bound For Glory".This was a great show by another band that needs to be seen in concert. My guess at attendance would be about 1300. Good times!!!
