KISS Collectible Of The Day Mar.31st

It's been a while since I have done a KISS Collectible. Today's collectible is a KISS Zippo Lighter that Janis bought me for Xmas this year. This lighter was produced in 2009 and works fine :)

Ticket Stub Of The Day Mar.31st (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Today's ticket stub is from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mike Watt concert my buddy A-Bomb and I went to in 2003 at The Skyreach Centre in Edmonton. This was my first time seeing RHCP in concert and was really looking forward to the show. Unfortunately, I left this show very disappointed, it felt like they were just going through the motions. A few other people I know that went to the concert thought it was great. I myself thought it sucked ass.

Concert Shirt/Poster Of The Day Mar.30th (Slayer)

Today's t-shirt is from the second time I saw Slayer in concert. This show was in 2006 at The Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. This was the Unholy Alliance Tour which included Lamb Of God, Children Of Bodom, Mastodon and Thine Eyes Bleed. It was a night of some very loud heavy music, almost too much for me. But Slayer kicked ass as per usual. Good times!!!

Another souvenir I bought at this show were Slayer rolling papers, cool idea I thought and from what I could tell, there were more then a few of them used during this concert.

In concert news... Slayer and Rob Zombie will be playing Rexall Place in Edmonton on Sunday July 31st.

Jackson Browne In Concert 03/28/2011

Last night my buddy Buzzard and I saw 62 year old California musician Jackson Browne in concert at The Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton on his Acoustic Solo Tour, play to an almost sold out crowd. This was my first time seeing Jackson Browne in concert. My buddy Buzzard got me into Jackson Browne's music years ago through such albums as Running On Empty, The Pretender and his debut album.

The first thing I noticed at the show was how old the crowd was, this was definitely an old hippies audience, lots of grey hair and bald or balding heads.

You sure couldn't say that about Jackson Browne though, when he came out on stage, I was surprised by how good he looks for someone that is 62 years old, he looks no different then he did in the 70's.

This show was just Jackson on guitar and piano (17 guitars behind him), hence the name of the tour (Solo Acoustic). While I don't know a lot of his songs, I did recognize songs like Late For The Sky, Rosie, Running On Empty and his Warren Zevon cover Don't Let Us Get Sick. He had no set list for the show instead opting to play whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. He took requests from the crowd through out the concert. One of the requests he took was a song called Going Down To Cuba, he said he couldn't remember all the words to the song. That's when his roadie brought out sheets of paper with the lyrics and laid them at his feet so that he could do the song, after asking for his glasses though, as he couldn't read the words that far away from him, no teleprompter here.

Jackson Browne played two set this evening, with the first one lasting about an hour and twenty minutes with a 20 minute break and then the second set playing for another hour or so. I have to admit, I was starting to get bored, the tunes just got a bit too mellow for me and long. While his guitar playing sounds good and his voice is still excellent, I just found two hours of him was too much for me. I can listen to a full album of his, but not sit still for two hours plus in a soft cushion venue, I caught myself yawning a few times. I thought the pace was going to pick up a bit when he brought out Mali singer/songwriter guitar player Habib Koite to join him in a song. It never really mounted to much though. Habib was in town for a show Tuesday night at The Winspear Centre.

One part of the show that bothered me, was when Jackson Browne started talking about an environmental issue that he supports, about getting rid of plastic bottles, that are polluting the ocean and such. That's all fine that he supports such things, nothing wrong with that, what I hate is when these musicians go on and on about such things. I want to hear music not your opinions on boycotting plastic bottles. If it was a benefit show, sure I understand, I mean I would never complain about Willie Nelson going on about the farmers at Farm Aid, but that's what the show is about. But when your playing a concert on tour, please refrain from over selling your causes.

To close out the show, or I think anyways, I left during The Eagles hit song Take It Easy that Jackson Browne wrote. All and all not a bad show. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more had Jackson brought a back up band with him. I would give this concert a 6 out of 10.

Ticket Stub Of The Day Mar.29th (Tragically Hip)

Today's ticket stub is from the time Lori and I went to Red Deer to see The Tragically Hip and By Divine Right at the Red Deer Centrium in 1999. I was interested in going to this show, just to see The Hip play a smaller venue. It wasn't a whole lot different then seeing them play the Coliseum in Edmonton other then it was about half the size. Both bands put on an excellent show. My biggest gripe out this concert was trying to get back to our hotel after the show. The Centrium is out in the boonies in Red Deer, as neither one of us drove, trying to get a cab out of there was a challenge. We ended up waiting almost an hour after the show to get a cab in -35 blowing cold winter weather. To say I was losing my patience wouldn't be a lie, fuck me, I just wanna go home damn it.

Setlist for Red Deer show.

2. Fully Completely

Concert Shirt/Poster Of The Day Mar.27th (The Sadies)

Today's t-shirt is from the Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo) with The Sadies concert I saw at The Power Plant on The University of Alberta campus grounds in 2006. I have been a huge fan of The Sadies since seeing them play with Heavy Trash a few years before. Well, I talked my buddies Mook and Buzzard into checking this show out with me. We saw all of Greg Keelor who was really good, as he also had The Sadies as his back up band which was fucking cool. Unfortunately, Mook and I didn't get to see all of the show as we got kicked out of the show. Actually, we didn't get kicked out, more like they wouldn't let us back into the show. Mook and I had stepped out for a smoke and a toke a few times during the evening. Eventually, campus security drove by and gave us the big shakedown saying they were getting complaints about people smoking pot outside the venue. Ya, there were people doing that, but they had to shake us down, checking our pockets and all, finding nothing of course,ha ha!!! We were then told we would not be allowed back in the venue, what the fuck is that. They didn't even catch us, anyways, after they left, of course we tried getting back in as Buzzard was still inside checking out the show. But nope, security kicked us out, so we had to find another bar and drink there til we could hook up with Buzzard after the show.
What I did see of the show, was another great performance by The Sadies. Greg Keelor was good as well.

Concert Shirt Of The Day Mar.25th (Eric Clapton)

Today's ticket stub is from only the second time I have ever been to a concert on my birthday. This show was Eric Clapton with Robert Cray opening at Rexall Place in Edmonton in 2007. This was the second time I had seen Eric Clapton in concert and have to say it was way better then the first time I saw him in 1998. I won tickets to this show from The Edmonton Sun and went with Hurl.

Concert Posters Of The Day Mar.24th (Guns N' Roses)

Today's posters are from the fourth time I saw Guns N' Roses in concert. This show was in 2006 at Rexall Place in Edmonton. Opening bands for this show were Sebastian Bach ex of Skid Row, who I thought was better then I had anticipated, after Bach was Helmet, a band I had never seen live before and have been a fan of for some time. I really liked their set, they rocked. Headliner of the evening was Axl Rose and his latest incarnation of Guns N' Roses. What a fucking joke this was. After Helmet, we waited almost 2 hours before GnR hit the stage, which made it almost midnite. The crowd was getting restless, and I was getting drunk by then. Have to say, I was not much impressed with them this time around. I grew up on the old GnR, them being one of my favorite bands in the mid 80's, when I was a teen. Axl and the band sounded alright, but I couldn't get past the GnR thing, this wasn't GnR, this was Axl solo with a back up band. I had a hard time keeping my eyes open during the show, until they brought out Bubbles and the boys from Trailer Park Boys to do the song "Liquor and Whores". You know it's bad when Bubbles steals the show from GnR.

I went to this show with Janis after I had won tickets from the local classic rock station K97.

Concert Shirt Of The Day Mar.23rd (Rolling Stones)

Today's t-shirt is from the second time I saw the Rolling Stones in concert, this was the second night of two sold out nights at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton in 1994. I didn't have a ticket for this show but thought I would go down to the stadium and see if I could get a cheap ticket. Lucky me, I was able to get a ticket from a guy for 20 dollars. The ticket was a floor seat way at the back of the stadium, but,hey I was there, that's what mattered. It rained a bit during the concert on this night, which made it a bit slippery and chilly. Again Colin James opened the show.

Ticket Stub Of The Day Mar.22nd (Helix)

Today's ticket stub is from the last time I saw the band Helix in concert. This show was in 1992 at Rock Central Station by Kingsway Mall in Edmonton. This was a fun show and for 5 dollars what the hell, on a Friday night too. Helix was the first band I ever saw in concert, so the band always brings back memories. A memory of this show was being up to no good and having a razor blade in my pocket. Making my way to the washroom to use the blade, I reached into my pocket and sliced my finger open, bad enough that I had blood all over my jean jacket and jeans. It's not easy to stop the bleeding when your heart is pumping like crazy. I finally did stop the bleeding by holding my finger in my jacket tight the rest of the evening. I wasn't the only one in the bar that night up to no good. Good times!!!

Concert Shirt Of The Day Mar.21st (Rolling Stones)

Today's t-shirt is from the first time I saw the Rolling Stones in concert. This show was in 1994 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton with Colin James opening. The show was in early October, an outdoor show in the stadium, it was a chilly evening in northern Alberta, but the show went on. If anything the beer didn't get warm that night. The Stones were touring for their album Voodoo Lounge and finally made their way to Edmonton for their first show ever here. They sold out Commonwealth Stadium for two shows, each show had about 50,000 people at them. I thought the Stones were old then, yet they are still kicking around. I went to this show with Buzzard, Mook, Mark and Sherry. Good times!!!

Concert Poster Of The Day Mar.20th (Dread Zeppelin)

Today's concert poster is from a Dread Zeppelin concert I saw in 1992 at The Bronx in Edmonton (I think it was 92'). This was my second time seeing the band. Dread Zeppelin were always a fun band to see live, with their Elvis impersonator doing Led Zep songs reggae style. I think this was the show that Nerraw got caught burning one down in the venue. At least the security didn't kick us out of the show thank goodness.

Audio/Rocketry at Permanent Records 03/19/11

Saturday afternoon I made my way down to Permanent Records on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton here to see a local band called Audio/Rocketry. A/R are promoting their new album "Piloting A Vehicle Of Audible Expression" with a free show at the local independent record store Permanent Records. I had never heard this band before let alone seeing them live. The record store is only blocks away from home, so I thought what the hell, I'll go check them out. Am I ever glad I did. I was quite impressed with their music, they were performing as a three piece and sounded quite good, considering they had just played a show the night before at the bar Pawn Shop for their record release party. Lead singer and songwriter Joe Vickers is quite a good guitar player and singer. So an afternoon show (1pm) probably made for a short nights sleep, nonetheless they were good. They kind of remind me of Elliot Brood a bit. I did pick up their newest album and am enjoying it.

Audio/Rocketry's newest release.

Front of t-shirt.

Audio/Rocketry will be playing at New City Legion in Edmonton 8130 Gateway Boulevard right next to Permanent Records just off of Whyte Ave. on Friday April 1st.
