Brandi Carlile Live In Edmonton May 10th 2013

Last night my buddies Hurl,Buzzard and I went to the Winspear Centre to see Brandi Carlile perform with opening act Scott Cook.

This was my second time seeing Washington based folk singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile in concert, having seen her in 2010 at the Edmonton Folk Fest where she won over a lot of fans, me included. On this evening she performed to a sold out crowd of 1700 fans of folkies. While I only have one of her albums, that being her 2012 album "Bear Creek" you can bet after seeing her play last night I will be picking up some of her previous releases. Brandi Carlile has am amazing voice and two guys backing her up twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth were no slouches either, excellent harmonies together, especially when the two guys did the Simon and Garfunkel cover "Sounds Of Silence". Another highlight of the show, was when all three of them did a truly unplugged song taking advantage of the venues acoustics, that was pretty damn cool too. The whole two hour show was a highlight. Brandi really seemed to be enjoying herself on stage and was super appreciative of her audience and more then once talked about getting her big break when she played the Edmonton Folk Fest a few years ago.

As for the opener of the show local folk artist Scott Cook put on a great show as well in his half hour set. He said he felt in awe playing a venue like the Winspear Centre as he used to playing halls, house shows and festivals. My favorite part of his set was the song he did which was an ode to the North Country Fair which is an annual summer solstice music festival held in Driftpile in northern Alberta, the song was called "Goin' Up To The Country" that was a great song. Scott has a mellow feel to his singing and playing but there is no doubt the man is talented. Checkout his site and hear the song "Goin' Up To The Country" by clicking here. All and all a great show and a good time. Also a big shout out to Blackbyrd Myoozik and Karpinka Brothers for the free tickets.

Scott Hook.
