Today's concert advertisement is from the time Lori and I went to see the Arrogant Worms play at Klondike Days in Edmonton in 1998. This was my second time seeing the Arrogant Worms play live. What a hoot they were to see. We then hung around to see Alannah Myles, who I can't stand, didn't like her at all.

Concert Shirt/Posters Of The Day July 29th (Ottawa Blues Fest.)
Today's t-shirt is from the Ottawa Blues Festival I went to in 2003 with my Brother (Citrus) and Lorreine. I had gone to Montreal with Lorreine to visit my brother while he lived there. We decided to make a day trip to Ottawa to catch Elvis Costello and The Imposters at the Festival. This was my first time being in Ottawa and first time seeing Elvis Costello in concert.
My brother was able to get us in to the show for free, as he was working for a record distribution company at the time and knew some of the vendors at the festival. He was able to snaggle a few free tickets for the show. We got there in the afternoon and caught some of Sonny Landreth's set and then next was Elvis. Elvis Costello put on an amazing show.

Concert Ad Of The Day July 28th (The Alleyboys)
Today's concert advertisement is from the time I saw San Francisco band The Alleyboys play at Peoples Pub in Edmonton in 1996. This was a great show, I had never heard of the band at the time, but they reminded me of Social D after seeing them. They rocked the joint. Speaking of joint, at this show, I stepped outside for a hoot between bands. While out smoking, a couple of pigs happened to be walking down the alley of Whyte Ave. when they smelled pot, I spotted them and quickly flicked the doobie to the ground. It didn't take long for the pigs to run up and quickly grab me and cuff me, they then proceeded to frisk me and make me take my shoes off, all the while standing on the ave., quite embarassing actually, but to there dismay, they never did find anymore on me. I learned my lesson years before, never have anymore on you then what you are smoking. The pigs weren't impressed, as they couldn't do fuck all cause I had nothing on me,, and possesion is 9/10th's the law. They finally uncuffed me and picked up what had be thrown away. I told them to enjoy it, as it was good pot and headed back in to the show. Thank goodness I didn't get busted. Good times!!!

Big Sugar and Wide Mouth Mason Live in Edmonton 07.24.2011
Last night my buddy Hurl and I ventured down to Capital Ex Fairgrounds in Edmonton here to catch Wide Mouth Mason and Big Sugar play. This felt like a 90's flashback with these two Canadian bands playing together.
The evening started with Wide Mouth Mason opening. This was my fourth time seeing them play live, I used to think they were a good live band, but have to say I just found them really middle of the road last night. the only interesting thing about their show was seeing Gordie Johnson, lead guitarist and singer of Big Sugar sitting in with Wide Mouth Mason playing bass through out the set. Actually it looks like Gordie is a member of the band now. That was cool, but still after about 4 songs, it was back to the beer garden for us.
Next up was headliners Big Sugar who are back together and touring for their new album "Revolution Per Minute" which is there first new album in 10 years. Big Sugar were one of my favorite bands to see in concert, as this was my twelfth time seeing them play live. I am a huge fan of Gordie on guitar, the man can play like no other, seriously one of the most underrated guitar players in the world.
Big Sugar played a two hour set of all there hits and lots of new stuff including "Roads Ahead", "Come A Little Closer...Now Come!", "Little Bit A All Right" and "It's All I Know". Gordie and the band sounded good, with a real reggae feel. The band is now a nine piece band, with members Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe still playing with them, playing the harp and horns and such, and of course bass player Garry Lowe keeping the groove happening. I do have to say though, I miss when Big Sugar was just a three piece band and were a little grittier and bluesier. Which is why I probably like Gordie's new band Grady a lot more. I have seen Big Sugar too many times and am starting to lose interest in them. Especially when they did a tune by The Trews, like really, why, play your own stuff please. Don't get me wrong, they are still awesome live. I just miss the old rock shows they used to put on. All and all, still a good time!!!
Big Sugar also brought up Clayton Bellamy of the Road Hammers to do a tune as well.

Los Fabulocos and Hillbilly Casino Live In Edmonton 07.23.11
Yesterday my buddy Buzzard and I headed to downtown Edmonton to take in part of The Edmonton Indy festivities. They had some bands playing as part of the Cars and Guitars Music Fest on Rice Howard Way. One of the bands we caught was a band from California called The Los Fabulocos who were making there very first Canadian appearance.
Los Fabulocos are lead by guitarist David "Kid" Ramos whom used to play in the Fabulous Thunderbirds. This guy is an amazing guitar player, playing some awesome solos. The band reminded me of the Los Lobos. Some of their songs were done in spanish much like Los Lobos, they also had Jesse Cuevas on accordian which was also super cool. All and all a tight band playing some wicked blues with spanish overtones. What I would really like to see, is them play a blues bar in town, somewhere like The Commercial or Rusty Reeds House Of Blues, now that would be the place to see these guys. They played an hour set which seemed to go over quite well with the sparse crowd that was there to see them.
After a few beers at the beer tent at the Taste Of Edmonton in Sir Winston Churchill Park, it was back to Rice Howard Way to catch the band Hillbilly Casino from Nashville, Tennessee. Hillbilly Casino are a rockabilly/honkytonk band that rocked the stage big time. I really enjoyed their hour long set as well. They reminded me of The Reverend Horton Heat. Through out their set they through in a few covers, one of them was the Motorhead song "Iron Fist", that sounded awesome rockabilly style, as did Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm", they also did a Marty Robbins cover. Lead singer Nic Roulette was very talented and entertaining and so full of energy, you couldn't help but get in to the band. Their original songs were great too, good enough, that I picked up a couple of their albums. I hope Hillybilly Casino comes through town again soon, I definitely would go to check them out again. There was a better crowd for these guys then Los Fabulocos, the sun finally coming out may have made a difference in that. All and all, a good time!!!
