Seven Inch Saturday (Sublime)
Today's seven inch single is a little something I picked up at a yard sale two weeks ago for a dollar, sweet deal! It is the Sublime seven inch Record Store Day 2009 release. The two songs on this are "April 29th 1992 (Leary)" song which is about the riots that happened in Los Angeles after the Rodney King verdict.
Side B has a song called "Superstar Punani".

Record Store Day 2015
So another Record Store Day has come and gone and again always a fun day. Though this year I didn't do near as well as previous years for getting what I was looking for. Part of that is my own fault as I just don't have the patience to line up outside my favorite local record shop at seven in the morning. So I skipped that line up and made my way to another shop, that being Sound Connection. They didn't have much for RSD releases, but did pick up a few things there.
After that it was off to Permanent Records to catch some free live music. They had three local bands performing through out the day. The first band was The Fuzz Kings, this is the second time they have played at Permanent on RSD. As the Fuzz Kings do a RSD tour of the city on RSD doing three shows in the course of the day at three different venues. They were good playing a 30-40 minute set of roots rock. The Fuzz Kings remind me of the Supersuckers.

Next band up was Billie Zizi in which I sadly missed.
And to close out the live music portion of the day at Permanent Records was the band Pal Joey. Luckily I made it back to the store to catch these guys perform. This was my second time seeing them in the last month, and what a great show they put on to a good crowd at the store. Very impressive.

Another record store I got to on Record Store Day was Blackbyrd Myoozik also on Whyte Avenue. This shop is where I have been picking up a lot of my music in the past couple of years. The line up at this store started early in the day and didn't dissipate til late afternoon. By the time I got in to the store it was slim pickings for RSD releases.
After Blackbyrd closed the store was putting on some live music of their own in the alley of the store with two local bands, them being The Lad Mags and Tropic Harbour and the best part was that there were free beers to be had. Nice way to wind down a busy day at the store and a nice way to show appreciation for there customers.
The first band up was the dreamy pop psychedelic music of Tropic Harbour. A band I had never heard before and were alright if your into that kind of thing.
Tropic Harbour live.
Next up was the band The Lad Mags, they are a band consisting of four women and a guy on drums that play garage rock.
The Lad Mags live.
All in all it was another fun Record Store Day. While I didn't get all the RSD releases I was looking for I still managed to pick up some good records. What did bother me this year with RSD releases were the prices on some of the records. Twenty three dollars for a seven inch single, like really, that's just ridiculous. Good times!!!
Can anyone help me with the following releases?
* Blitzen Trapper - Harvest
* Lucero - Jukebox Series #3
If you can help, please get in touch with me at (mot1970 at shaw.ca).
Thanks.

Seven Inch Sunday (Nirvana)
Today's seven inch single is a Nirvana bootleg I bought a few years back. The title of it is Beauty And Power E.P. that came out in 1991 on Karst Records. I have never heard of this label or seen anything else come out on this label.
The cover of this seven inch says it play at 33rpm, but that is wrong as it needs to be played at 45rpm. One of the songs on here is a song called "If You Must" that is from a demo done in 1988 at Reciprocal Recording Studio in Seattle, Washington. The song did eventually get released on the Nirvana box set With The Lights Out that came out in 2004. It is mislabelled on the back cover as Happy Hour and the times of the songs are also wrong. The other two songs on this are Downer and Hairspray Queen from the 1992 album Incesticide, though both recording are really rough. This EP is for collectors only. Not very good.

Dolly Rotten Live Apr.3rd 2015
It's been a busy week so I am just now getting to write about the show my Cuz and I went to last Friday. The show was at the Pawn Shop and was the CD release party for local band Dolly Rotten. Other bands on the bill were Lonesome Dove (in which we missed), Kurt West Express and The Devil's Sons all Edmonton bands.
We got there in time to catch the Kurt West Express band. They are a country/rock band. They were alright but need some work.
Kurt West Express at the Pawn Shop.
Next up was The Devil's Sons, who are a rockabilly three piece band. Rockabilly isn't my kind of music, the band has talent no doubt, just not my thing.
The Devil's Sons at the Pawn Shop.
Headliner of the evening were Dolly Rotten celebrating the release of there debut album called "Coming For You". This was my second time seeing the band play live, the first time being when they opened for the Supersuckers about six months ago. By the time Dolly Rotten hit the stage around midnite, the place was packed, which was great to see. And everyone was pretty primed by this point.
Dolly Rotten play a sytle of music I would describe as a mix of rock n' roll with tinges of punk, metal and some country. This six piece band has it going on, from lead singers Lace Daryns awesome vocals, guitar by Kurt West and Greg Stefishen and the nice touch of pedal steel player Smokey Fennel which gives the band that country tinge. Put it all together and you get some great blue collar rock n' roll.
With song titles such as Working Class SOB, Paint My Collar Blue, Drive Me To Drink and Brand New Drug, you get the idea what Dolly Rotten is about. The songs are well written and the musicianship is top notch as well. Their songs can start as just straight up rock n' roll, but when it kicks in, that is when the metal/punk comes out, then when Lace tears in to the song it is in your face, she can really belt it out and is a very impressive vocalist. All and all Dolly Rotten is an impressive band and has a great future in front of them. A great show. Good times!!!
