October 9th

  On October 9th, 1993 I attended Moshfest '93 at Northlands Agricom in Edmonton. An all day festival featuring such bands as SNFU, Cadillac Tramps, Disciples Of Power, King Apparatus, Pal Joey, Drool and many more. A very fun day indeed.

Pal Joey at The Empress Ale House Jan.20th 2018

On Saturday afternoon I made my way to the Empress Ale House here in Edmonton to catch local act Pal Joey. This was my fourth time seeing them play live. Pal Joey don't play a lot of shows, maybe four a year if that, so it's a rare occasion to see them.

I got to the bar just before show time and the place was packed, which was good to see. This time around Pal Joey performed as just a four piece band, as the previous times I had seen them, they had a horn section. I have to say I enjoy them much more without the horns. Just felt more rocking and fun. The band led by Trent Buhler on vocals and guitar sounded really good. Their sound is a little bit country punk, with a little Elvis Costello mixed in. The band still has two original members Trent Buhler and bassist Tom Murray who plays amazing. Cliff Culbert is the second guitarist and is damn good as is the drummer Scott Lingley.

The band played a good mix of songs from their three albums. Songs like "A Little Less Wasteful" from their 1999 album The New Dance. Some songs from their 1995 debut album Tennessee Angels, which is really good. "Down On Me" was played as was "Last Chance for Food and Drink", "Waiting For Lefty" and "Act of God" at least I am pretty sure these were all played. And of course there were some songs from their latest album Lucky Pennies which came out in 2015. I know they played "Five and Dimin'" and "Heartbreak Station" from said album. All and all it was a great way to spend an afternoon listening and watching a great band. Good times!!!

Record Store Day 2015

So another Record Store Day has come and gone and again always a fun day. Though this year I didn't do near as well as previous years for getting what I was looking for. Part of that is my own fault as I just don't have the patience to line up outside my favorite local record shop at seven in the morning. So I skipped that line up and made my way to another shop, that being Sound Connection. They didn't have much for RSD releases, but did pick up a few things there.

After that it was off to Permanent Records to catch some free live music. They had three local bands performing through out the day. The first band was The Fuzz Kings, this is the second time they have played at Permanent on RSD. As the Fuzz Kings do a RSD tour of the city on RSD doing three shows in the course of the day at three different venues. They were good playing a 30-40 minute set of roots rock. The Fuzz Kings remind me of the Supersuckers.

Next band up was Billie Zizi in which I sadly missed.

And to close out the live music portion of the day at Permanent Records was the band Pal Joey. Luckily I made it back to the store to catch these guys perform. This was my second time seeing them in the last month, and what a great show they put on to a good crowd at the store. Very impressive.

Another record store I got to on Record Store Day was Blackbyrd Myoozik also on Whyte Avenue. This shop is where I have been picking up a lot of my music in the past couple of years. The line up at this store started early in the day and didn't dissipate til late afternoon. By the time I got in to the store it was slim pickings for RSD releases.

After Blackbyrd closed the store was putting on some live music of their own in the alley of the store with two local bands, them being The Lad Mags and Tropic Harbour and the best part was that there were free beers to be had. Nice way to wind down a busy day at the store and a nice way to show appreciation for there customers.

The first band up was the dreamy pop psychedelic music of Tropic Harbour. A band I had never heard before and were alright if your into that kind of thing.

Tropic Harbour live.

Next up was the band The Lad Mags, they are a band consisting of four women and a guy on drums that play garage rock.

All in all it was another fun Record Store Day. While I didn't get all the RSD releases I was looking for I still managed to pick up some good records. What did bother me this year with RSD releases were the prices on some of the records. Twenty three dollars for a seven inch single, like really, that's just ridiculous. Good times!!!

Can anyone help me with the following releases?

* Blitzen Trapper - Harvest
* Lucero - Jukebox Series #3

If you can help, please get in touch with me at (mot1970 at shaw.ca).
Thanks.

Pal Joey at The Artery March 7th 2015

Last Saturday my Cuz and I made our way to the soon to be closed venue downtown called The Artery to see local pop punk/country band Pal Joey with opener Amy van Keeken.

This show was the CD release show for Pal Joey, their first new music since 1999. Their new album is called Lucky Pennies, which is really good by the way.

This was my third time seeing the band live, and first since 1993's Moshfest. So it had been a long time. The band lead by Trent Buhler sounded pretty damn good on this evening. Pal Joey did two sets on this night. This time around, the band has a horn section consisting of three guys. While I really enjoyed their set, I have to admit that I found the horn section, whom are called the Brassholes, started to get to me after a while. I do like horns in songs, I found that the horns were too loud and drowned out the guitars and bass at times. The horns just started to be over powering and took away from the rock n' roll that Pal Joey play so well. When there were no horns is when I really liked the show. These guys can rock, they remind me of another old Canadian band called Lowest Of The Low at times. The band covered music from all three of their albums. All and all a great show by Pal Joey, looking forward to seeing them perform again soon. Good times!!!

Opener was a lady by the name of Amy van Keeken doing a solo show for the most part. I didn't realize that she also plays in the local band The Awesome Hots. She sounded good during her set, but it really wasn't my thing. Just my opinion of course.

In other news... as I mentioned earlier, The Artery will be shutting down at the end of March, which is sad as this is a great room to see an intimate show. I have only been two shows at this venue, but both times were great shows with good turn outs and great staff. Always sucks to lose a live music venue in a city, especially when it is because of city bureaucracy.

The Artery will be putting on a two day closing party on Saturday March 28th and Sunday March 29th with music from bands all day starting at noon both days. The club has started a fund raiser program, as they are looking for a new place to set up. Checkout their website to see how to donate.

21 Years Ago Today...Jan.14th

It was twenty-one years ago today that I saw Canadian comedy team MacLean and MacLean perform at Peoples Pub in Edmonton. Sadly both men have since passed, but if you can find their albums they are well worth picking up.

It was seven years ago today as well that I saw the Tragically Hip play in Edmonton with opening act Toronto band The Sadies.

It was 19 years ago today as well that I saw this show that my brother Captain Citrus put on at a club called Multi-Purpose Rumpus Room here in Edmonton. The show was made up of bands from Calgary and Edmonton. The headliners were Calgary band Field Day with locals Pal Joey, Furnace Maintenance and All Woman Brothers Band.

In concert news... The Tragically Hip with openers The Arkells will be playing in Edmonton next week Wednesday January 23rd.
