Mike Plume Live in Sherwood Park July 13th 2019

A couple weeks ago my buddy Buzzard and I went to Oscars Pub in Sherwood Park to see Mike Plume play a rare show. Anyone that follows my blog knows how big of fan I am of Mike. Mike was covering for a friend that usually plays Friday and Saturdays at Oscars but was taking the weekend off, so Mike stood up to the plate and covered for him. Now this isn't the kind of shows Mike usually does anymore, it is how he got his start, but now Mike plays shows more so then doing the singer in the pub kind of gig. But I got an invite from Mike letting me know about the two night stand he was doing, so we went to check it out. In Mike's words "this will be a hoot". And damn he was right. Mike did four sets of about 30-40 minutes each, doing all kinds of cover songs and a few of his own as well.

Some artists he covered on this night were John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, John Hiatt, Todd Snider, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle,John Prine, Tragically Hip, Bob Dylan, Corb Lund, Tom Waits, Stompin' Tom Connors (The Ketchup Song in which I requested) and man did he ever do a great job on that one as he did with all of them. I also requested a song of his own "Voice Like A Song" from his latest album Born By The Radio a song I had yet to hear him play live, so that was cool and again sounded amazing. This was a super fun night of hearing Mike Plume play songs that he used to do when he first started gigging. Good times!!!

Punk In Drublic Craft Beer & Music Fest Edmonton July 6th 2019

Three weeks ago my buddy RCD and I went to the Punk In Drublic Craft Beer and Music Festival at the Expo Centre here in Edmonton. This show was originally supposed to be an outdoor festival on the grounds of the Expo Centre, but because of our shitty weather here this summer it was moved indoors. This is the second time I have gone to what was supposed to be an outdoor show at this venue only to have it moved indoors (first one being Sonic Boom in 2011) and both times it never did rain. The Expo Centre is a terrible venue for a concert. The sound was awful unless you were within 30 yards of the front of the stage, any further away and the sound was terrible.

A cool part of this festival was the craft beer. Between noon and 4pm there were free samples of beer from about 30 different craft beer breweries. So we indulged as did many others. But at 4 o'clock, that was it, they closed down that part of the hall and now it was into the concert hall part where they sold Labatt products, that were stupid expensive and included lining up for 40 fucking minutes to get a damn beer.

We missed the first band of the day The Last Gang. I had seen them once before opening for Swingin' Utters last fall and didn't much care for them. They were on at 3pm, so we stayed in the beer hall and sampled more beers.

The first band we caught were Chixdiggit from Calgary. This band has been around for close to thirty years, yet I had never seen them live before. Not sure how many are original members in the band anymore, but lead singer KJ Jansen who I know is the original singer and guitarist sounded great. I enjoyed their set.

Chixdiggit.

Next up was Gainesville, Florida ska punk band Less Than Jake. This would be my third time seeing LTJ in concert. I've always been a fan of the band and was looking forward to seeing them again. I haven't bought an album of theirs since 1998's Hello Rockview, so I didn't know all their songs. But the ones I did recognize were "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts", "All My Best Friends Are Metal Heads", "Last One Out Of Liberty City" and "Look What Happened". They had the crowd dancing, and the band looked to be having a good time. I enjoyed their set as well.

Less Than Jake.

The third band we saw was Los Angeles band Bad Religion. This would be my second time seeing them in concert. I'm more a fan of these guys now then I was back in the day. Their set was rocking from start to finish with the band covering songs from their whole discography. There seemed to be at least one song from every album, or it seemed that was anyways. Opening the show with the song "Fuck Armageddon... This Is Hell" from their very first album. By the time Bad Religion hit the stage the crowd had swelled, and was probably the biggest crowd of the night for these guys. Other songs played that I knew were "The Dichotomy", "Suffer", "21st Century (Digital Boy)", "Sorrow" and "The Handshake" plus many others. I really liked their set and was my favourite of the night.

Bad Religion.

Headlining the festival was NOFX, whom the festival is named after "Punk In Drublic" which is the name of their 1994 album, making this tour the 25th anniversary of said album. This would be my second time seeing the band in concert. Fat Mike who is the bassist and lead singer of the band and also owns the record label Fat Wreck Chords, in which all the bands at this festival have released an album on the label.

Fat Mike as is known for came out on stage wearing a dress, which was no surprise as that seems to be his stage wear nowadays. I really am just not a fan of NOFX. There songs are kind of juvenile and I don't find the band to be all that talented. And from where we were standing, which was aways back the sound was awful. There was a big crowd in front of the stage eating it up, but RCD and I weren't one of them. We left about two thirds of the way through their set, and as we were leaving, it looked like we weren't the only ones. So I have to say, didn't much care for them.

NOFX.

All and all it was fun night out, but think it would have been a whole lot better had the show been staged outside like it was supposed to be. Good times!!!

Danny Michel Live in Toronto June 29th 2019

On our last night of holidays I got to see Danny Michel in concert, a free show at the Harbourfront Centre in downtown Toronto on a beautiful hot evening. This show was part of the Canada Day long weekend festivities. This would be my sixth time seeing Danny in concert. And as always, this was another great show.

I hadn't seen Danny in concert since the release of his EP White & Gold last year, so it was nice to hear some of the new songs like "Purgatory Cove" and "Born in the Wild". He also of course played some of his classics like "What Colour Are You?", "Feather, Fur & Fin", "Wish Willy", "Click Click" and "Tennessee Tobacco", plus many others. Sadly I had to miss the last fifteen minutes of the show as I had a train to catch to get back to Burlington. I was really hoping to hear the song "The Right Thing" from his White & Gold album, so not sure if that was played or not. One more reason to go see him again, in hopes of hearing that song live.

Danny sounded great for doing his first show in over a month, though he did mention he was being distracted with everything else going on around him, like the planes taking off and landing on the lake in front of him, the boats coming in, planes flying over, and just the general chaos of people all over wandering the harbour front.

Still a very fun show, and for free, can't go wrong there. Good times!!!

In concert news...Danny Michel will be playing at Festival Place in Sherwood Park on Thursday October 3rd.

Perry Farrell Live in Toronto June 25th 2019

Another show I caught while on holidays was Perry Farrell at the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto. I was super stoked about getting to see this concert, as I really like Perry Farrell's new project The Kind Heaven Orchestra the new album Kind Heaven is very interesting mixing rock, psychedlia, pop and just plain weirdness, would you expect anything else from the one time lead man of Jane's Addiction and Porno For Pyros. The album Kind Heaven came out just a few weeks before this show, and this was the only Canadian date on the tour so far. Having only seen Jane's Addiction once and never getting to Porno For Pyros live, this was gonna be an experience to see Perry play a club. I was a little surprised that the show wasn't sold out, by my guess I would say the club holds around 600 people, I would say there were maybe 400-500 in attendance. Maybe because it was a Tuesday night show, who knows. There was no opening act, just Perry Farrell and his nine piece band. And the set was only 75 minutes long, so with an 8:30 start, this show was over early, which surprised me.

Perry Farrell and his band which includes his wife Etty Farrell also on vocals opened the show with a song from Kind Heaven called "More Than I Could Bear". Perry came out wearing a big ass hat bare chested in a vest with a huge puffy sleeve on one arm and a lace glove on the other, while his wife Etty was wearing a red lingerie kind of outfit and looking some good in it too. During the first song the two were singing together and dancing when Perry went to dip his wife but ended up dropping her, oh oh, this isn't a good way to start. She didn't look impressed, but seemed to get over it quickly. The short set was made up mostly of songs from Kind Heaven which also included "(red, white, and blue) Cheerfulness", "Machine Girl", "Where Have You been All My Life" and the first single "Pirate Punk Politician". They also played a couple Porno For Pyros songs, the first one being "Pets" which then segued into another new song "Snakes Have Many Hips". The other Porno song they did was the beautiful "Tahitian Moon".

One of the biggest surprises for me was when Perry said I understand we are playing a Mod Club and said let's play a little mod song and ended up doing the Tom Petty song "I Need To Know". The biggest and loudest reaction to songs of course were the Jane's Addiction songs they did which were "Been Caught Stealing", "Jane Says" and to close out the short set "Mountain Song", all of these old songs sounded incredible with Perry still able to hit all the notes. All and all a great show just wish it had been longer. Good times!!!

Outlaw Music Festival Live in Toronto June 21st 2019

Well it's been almost a month already since my Sweetie Janis and I went to Ontario for holidays. While there I managed to catch a few concerts. The first one I went to was the Outlaw Music Festival in Toronto at Budweiser Stage (formerly known as the Molson Amphitheatre). We lucked out with this show as I managed to get cheap tickets for the show, 20 dollar tickets all-in, as part of Ticketmaster's Summer Concert Series. And because tickets were so inexpensive we took Janis' daughter Shannon and son Steve and their partners Sheldon and Coline.

This line-up for Toronto's Outlaw Music Festival was Willie Nelson headlining with opening acts, Jessica Mitchell, Matt Mays, Alison Krauss and The Avett Brothers. Not bad for 20 dollars, our tickets were general admission, so on the upper part of the venue on the lawn. But when we got there and went through security, staff were giving away upgrade tickets, so we ended up having tickets in the 200 section which were way closer and probably about 100 dollar tickets, so that was a bonus. I asked the lady handing tickets out if the show hadn't sold very well, why else would they be doing this. She said that Willie just likes to have his audience as close as possible. For a venue that holds almost 18,000 people, my guess would be it was probably about two thirds full. So now we had the choice of sitting in seats closer to the stage or if we wanted to veg out, we could go up on the lawn. Best of both worlds. I had been to this venue once before and really liked it, and have to say, I still do. Great sight lines, sound was good and you could actually have a drink everywhere including the smoking section where you could smoke both cigarettes and weed.

We didn't get there in time to catch Toronto artist Jessica Mitchell. By the time we got settled in it was time for Matt Mays. This would be my third time seeing this Dartmouth, Nova Scotian musician. I thought it might just be a solo set but much to my surprise he had the full band backing him up, so that was cool. Matt's set was rocking , even though I didn't recognize a lot of the songs in his 40 minute set. I believe there may have been a couple of brand new songs. The songs I did recognize sounded great, like "Ola Volo" and "Station Out Of Range" from his 2017 album Once Upon a Hell of a Time, as well as "Building A Boat" from his Terminal Romance album, my favorite of his. Closing out his set was a song that I really like also from said album "Tall Trees". You could tell Matt Mays was in his glory having the opportunity to open for Willie Nelson.

Matt Mays will be playing Edmonton on Friday October 25th at the Myer Horowitz Theatre.

Matt Mays.

Next up was Alison Krauss a country/bluegrass singer and musician from Illinois. I don't know a lot of her of her music other then the album she did with Robert Plant in 2007 Raising Sand, an album I love. Sadly her and her awesome back up band didn't play anything off it. Her set was top notch, she as an amazing voice, and after listening to her set I did recognize a few of her songs. Like what is probably her most famous song "When You Say Nothing At All", which is actually a cover song I have come to learn. Overall she was really good and am very happy to have seen her in concert.

Alison Krauss.

Next up was The Avett Brothers out of North Carolina. They are lead by brothers Scott Avett on lead vocals, banjo and guitar and Seth Avett on vocals, guitar and piano. I've never really got into these guys other then the one album I own Emotionalism, which is alright. They only played one song from that album. The rest of the songs I was hearing pretty much for the first time. The two brothers and the backing band were certainly looking like they were having fun on stage. Lots of energy, they had the crowd up and dancing and singing along, looked like lots of people were really digging them. I myself found them to be a lot like Mumford and Sons, which I just am not a fan of. They were much better then them, and I did enjoy their set for the most part. Would I go see them again, probably not.

The Avett Brothers.

As the sun went down it was tome for the headliner of the Outlaw Music Festival, the one and only Willie Nelson & Family. This would be my third time seeing Willie Nelson in concert, and man, I was excited. Lots of beers, smokes, beautiful weather, awesome people, great venue and now for some classic Willie, does it get better? It was back to our good seats for Willie's set. Though we did wander back up to the lawn for the back end of the show, after all, that's where things were really happening!

Before the show started there up on stage was Willie's guitar Trigger, probably the most famous guitar being played in the world right now. I tried my best to get a decent picture of Trigger, but as you will see, I really didn't get the picture I wanted, but nonetheless, did get one.

Trigger.

The show started with Willie's band which is made up of his sister Bobbie on piano, Mickey Raphael on harmonica, Paul English on drums all of whom have been in Willie's band since 1973, rounded out by Billy English on percussion and Kevin Smith on bass, then walked out the man of the hour Willie, picking up ol' Trigger and breaking into "Whiskey River", such an awesome opener and the song I have seen him open with all three times I have seen him in concert. And of course, when Willie hit the stage the crowd rose to their feet giving him a standing O'.

His set was so fucking good, just have a look at the setlist. I was surprised by the third song "Beer For My Horses" which I knew wasn't a Willie song, but after asking the younger folks I was with, was told it is a Toby Keith song. I know I had heard it before, but never really paid much attention to it until Willie played it on this night, what a fun song. Which of course wasn't the only fun song of the evening.

At 86 years old Willie looks and sounds amazing. With them big old fat fingers of his, the man can play guitar. The first time I saw Willie in concert I was super close to the stage and was blown away by how good he is on guitar, well, that still stand up today. Willie's set was chock full of classics like "If You've Got The Money", "Down Yonder", "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time", "On The Road Again", "You Were Always On My Mind" and a couple of Hank Williams songs "Hey Good Lookin'" and "Move It On Over", what can ya say, just classic songs that I heard a lot of during my youth. One of my favourite parts was Willie doing two, soon to be classic pot songs "It's All Going To Pot" a song him and Merle Haggard did together on the 2015 album Django & Jimmie. Following up that song with "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die", well to say the venue didn't get a little hazy after them two songs back to back would be an understatement.

To close out the show The Avett Brothers came out and played "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" and "I'll Flay Away", with Willie and Family. What a fucking awesome night out, so much fun! Good times!!!
