David Lee Roth Live in Edmonton July 10th 2026

 

 When this show was announced my buddy Nazz and I talked about going, even though we had seen footage and reviews of previous shows saying that the shows just weren't very good. Yet, we still wanted to see for ourselves. After looking into tickets, it was a hard NO. We weren't about to pay $100 to see the train wreck. Well a few days before the show I got an email from the River Cree Casino where the show as booked, I am signed up for the River Cree newsletter, in the email it said free tickets for David Lee Roth, you just had to pay the service charges. Looked into that, and tickets ended up being $29, ok I can deal with that. So we bit the bullet my buddies Nazz, A-Bomb, Buzzard and I got tickets for the train wreck.

 This would be my second time seeing Diamond Dave solo and also saw him once fronting his old band Van Halen. Now going into the show we knew it wasn't going to be very good, but we still went in with a good attitude thinking it can't be that bad, can it. I mean it's David Lee Roth, he's always had a huge ego, always the entertainer and hell he fronted one of the premier rock n' roll bands of the 80's, and I liked a few of his solo albums, especially Eat Em' And Smile from 1986 and his follow up 1988's Skyscraper. 

 The venue was far from sold out, even with free tickets the place was only maybe half full. No opening band, just two hours of David Lee Roth with his back up band. David is now 71 years old, so you know the voice isn't what it once was (not that I think he was really that great of singer to start with) he no longer does the jumps and running around the stage he used to do, all understandable, he's aging like the rest of us. Opening the show with "Panama" a huge hit for Van Halen back in 1984. It didn't take long to see that, well he just doesn't have it anymore, his back up band and back up singers were all good, but Roth himself barely sang, more talked his way through songs. If you look at the setlist, you would think that is a great set, all Van Halen songs which was disappointing to me. I really was hoping to hear a few from his solo albums, but nope. After about six songs it was just kind of taking in what we thought would be a train wreck more like a fucking plane crash. It was really bad, one of the wors shows I have ever seen. And now I see that DLR has cancelled the rest of his tour, no wonder, time to hang it up Mr. Roth, sorry dude!

 It was January 8th 1987 that I saw David Lee Roth play Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton on his Eat Em' and Smile Tour. Opening the show was Harlequin.

26 Years Ago Today...Jan.8th

Got a couple of show for you today.

It was twenty-six years ago today that I saw David Lee Roth in concert for the first time. The show was at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton.

Also on this day, twenty-one years ago I saw The Cult with Lenny Kravitz opening again in Edmonton at the Agricom. I was there to see Lenny Kravitz as I have never been a fan of The Cult.

Today's t-shirt is from the time I saw David Lee Roth in concert. This show was in 1987 at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton. David Lee Roth was touring for his album Eat em' And Smile, his back up band at the time included Steve Vai on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass and Gregg Bissonette on drums, a very good band for the time. The opening band for the show was supposed to be Andy Taylor, who used to be in Duran Duran, but he cancelled and it ended up being Harlequin who pretty much got booed off the stage by the sold out crowd. I went to this show with my buddy Eor. A great show and a good time.

Old School Album Of The Week For Feb. 22nd - 26th

Here is an album I haven't listened to in ages. David Lee Roth's first full length solo release after leaving Van Halen, Eat 'Em And Smile released in 1987.
This album is actually a fun album to listen to again. He had an excellent back up band for this release with Steve Vai on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass and drummer Greg Bissonette. The album starts with the song Yankee Rose and Steve Vai's guitar mimicking Roth's vocals. My other favorite tracks on Eat 'Em And Smile are Shy Boy which rocks all the way through, Goin' Crazy is another good one and Bump And Grind is good as well. The whole album is quite good.
I remember getting the chance to see David Lee Roth on this tour in 1987 at Northland's Coliseum with Harlequin opening, whom basically got booed off the stage. The place was sold out and no one was there to see them play that's for sure. Harlequin actually was a last minute add on as Andy Taylor ex of Duran Duran was supposed to be the openers but were cancelled for some reason.
This was my first time see Roth in concert as I didn't get the chance to see him when he was in Van Halen. It was an excellent concert with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan almost stealing the show. Roth sounded good and was his usual self, jumping and singing his heart out and of course being a ladies man. There were a whole lot of hot and skanky women at this show. I don't recall who I went to this show with, but I had row 4 on the floor for this show and had a really good time.
