September 24th

  I have no ticket stub for this show was as the venue ticket takers took the full ticket with no stub returned much to my dismay. What I do have though are great memories and concert ads from this awesome Flaming Lips concert I saw at the Edmonton Event Centre. The Flaming Lips had a production for this show that was on the scale of a coliseum show, but played in a nightclub. Such an amazing concert!

Seven Inch Sunday (Flaming Lips/Mastodon)

Today's seven inch single is split seven inch featuring the Flaming Lips song A Spoonful Weighs A Ton from their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin. Side B has the band Mastodon covering the Flaming Lips song. This single was a Record Store Day 2012 release on baby pink vinyl.

Seven Inch Saturday (The Flaming Lips)

Today's seven inch single is The Flaming Lips covering the White Stripes song "Seven Nation Army". The B side of this single is a spoken word thing called "The Jist" by the artist David Shrigley from England.

This single came out in 2005 and from what I have read it was a limited print of 100 copies from the London, England record label Azuli Records.

The Flaming Lips covering The White Stripes is good and definitely has the Flaming Lips twist to it.



Any concert news...The Flaming Lips will be playing in Edmonton on Sunday September 6th as part of the Sonic Boom Music Festival.

23 Years Ago Today...September 24th

It was twenty-three years ago today that I saw Robert Plant with openers The Black Crowes play Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton.

And it was three years ago today that I saw The Flaming Lips play Edmonton Event Centre.

22 Years Ago Today...July 26th

It was twenty-two years ago today that I saw the Tragically Hip play at the Convention Centre here in Edmonton.

Also on this day twelve years ago, I saw Reverend Horton Heat with openers Bare Jr. play a place called Suburbs here in Edmonton.

And it was on this day five years ago that I was at day two of the Pemberton Music Festival in Pemberton, British Columbia. Some of the bands I saw on this day were the Flaming Lips, Tragically Hip, Sam Roberts, Black Mountain and headliners Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Concert Shirt/Poster Of The Day Aug.27th (Pemberton Festival)

Today's t-shirt is from the Pemberton Festival my buddy Hurl and I went to in Pemberton, British Columbia in 2008. It was a twelve hour drive from Edmonton to get to this festival, but what a fucking time it was. Well worth the time and money. It was the first time they had put on the fest and unfortunately the last too. While the fest wasn't run all that well, with long waits to get on to the site, although, the way we got there, we had no wait. But if you were coming to it from Vancouver, it was a nightmare. Hurl and I had an absolute blast at this festival, partying hard for 2 days and seeing some wicked bands, and few bands that I had never seen before. An awesome line up that included the following bands that we caught.

On the Friday night we saw... Nine Inch Nails (this was the first time I saw them), Serj Tankian of System Of A Down (first time seeing him solo), Wolfmother (2nd time seeing them), Kathleen Edwards (first time seeing her).

Saturday we saw...Tom Petty (first time seeing him),The Tragically Hip (12th time seeing The Hip), Flaming Lips (first time), My Morning Jacket (2nd time), Sam Roberts (3rd time), Secret Machines (2nd time) and Black Mountain (first time).

After two days of hard drinking and among other things, no shower, covered in dust and a wicked hang over, we woke up Sunday morning and decided to call it a day. It was going to be a 3 hour wait before bands started and it was raining, we said the hell with this and made the twelve hour drive back home.

This was one of the best weekend I have ever had, good times, awesome bands, great location for a festival. I just wish they were still putting on this festival, I would have gone again. Good times!!!

Flaming Lips Live In Edmonton 09.24.10

Last night September 24th my friend A-Bomb and I went to see The Flaming Lips play in concert for the first time in Edmonton at The Edmonton Events Centre. Yay, decent show on a Friday night, too bad about the venue though. We missed the opening act Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. I had never heard of the band before but thought, what a cool name, so I bought their newest album "Before Today" and gave it a listen a few weeks before the show. Wasn't impressed at all, therefore we decided beers would be better then checking them out.

We got to the venue just in time, as they had just hit the stage as we walked in, great timing yet again. This was my second time seeing The Lips play live (the first time being at Pemberton Music Fest in 2008),this was A-Bomb's first time seeing them. Now we have freaked out to The Lips a few times over the years, so we were stoked on checking this show out. I wasn't too sure what kind of show we were going to see, being in a club and not one of the venues I really care for. Well, all I can say is,wow, what a fucking show.

The stage set up and production of this show was big enough for a coliseum show. This is probably the biggest production I have ever seen in a club,between the lighting and huge video screen with cool images,confetti,streamers,balloons,huge disco balls and the cam on lead singer Wayne Coyne's mic the only thing missing was lasers. My only complaint I have is that I think the volume was a bit on the loud side (or maybe I'm just getting old). But if you knew The Flaming Lips music, you would have no problem picking out what they were playing. Some of the songs they did this evening was the old hit "She Don't Use Jelly" from the 1993 album "Transmissions From The Satellite Heart", then the title song from "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" and the song "Do You Realize" from the same album, then the hilarious song "I Can be A Frog" from their newest album Embryonic, fuck did we laugh at this song, they had the whole crowd growling like wolves,tigers,making monkey noises,meowing like cats all kinds of shit. The y played for about an hour and a half with not a slow or boring moment through out.One disappointment was that they didn't do anything from their version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.All and all an excellent evening of psychedelia and freak out music, good times!!! I would give this show a 10 out of 10. Man, I have seen some amazing shows this year.

















I would like to give a shout out to the Vancouver based artist Robert Edmonds that designed the poster for this show. I was having a hard time finding a poster for this show, so I googled the poster and found the blog for the artist that designed the Flaming Lips poster. I got a hold of him asking if there was a way of getting a poster for the show. Within a few days he got back to me and said he would look into it for me. A week later I got a package from the promoter Live Nation with a copy of the poster. Thanks Robert for going out of your way for me, much appreciated. I recommend checking out his blog and his art. Flaming Lips Album Review

Thought I would finally write a short review of this awesome album by The Flaming Lips doing Pink Floyd's classic "Dark Side Of The Moon". Seeing as The Flaming Lips will be playing in Edmonton this Friday September 24th at The Edmonton Events Centre.

Not many bands could get away with covering this album, but I have to say The Flaming Lips do an admirable job of doing this album. I am very impressed. I now know what they say between some of the songs in the spoken word parts, as Henry Rollins does the speaking parts and is actually understandable.

If you are fan of The Lips or Dark Side Of The Moon I highly recommend checking this out. I give this a 10 out of 10.

Here is hoping The Flaming Lips do this album Friday night, that would be awesome.





Notice the way the centre piece label is covering the vinyl, shitty deal, makes that side of the album un-listenable. Thank god the vinyl came with a copy of the CD.

If you are a fan of psychedelic music, I highly recommend checking this show out. The Flaming Lips are a very fun band to see in concert.
