Everclear Live in Edmonton August 17th 2025

  I'm so far behind on concert reviews that I'm making these all very short. Starting with this Everclear show that my buddies Nazz, A-Bomb, Melanie and I went to at the Fan Park in the Ice District in Edmonton. A venue I had never been to before, all it is, is a big tent outside of Rogers Place. I was surprised that the sound was actually much better than I was expecting. I was also surprised by the small turnout for this show, but with it being on a Sunday and the price of tickets, I guess I shouldn't have been. Eighty plus dollars for Everclear is just way too much. Thankfully I had won tickets to this show, otherwise I would have passed, having just seen Everclear in April last year. This wold be my third time seeing them in concert.

 The first band of the night was a local alt-rock band Hungry Hollow, who apparently have been around since 2013. Never heard of them before, they have a very 90's alternative rock sound reminiscent of bands like Third Eye Blind, 3 Doors Down among other shitty bands. They did nothing for me at all, just very generic sounding.

 Next up was another local act, this being Lucette (Lauren Gillis). I had never seen her perform but had heard good things about her and her band, so i was looking forward to seeing her. Not sure how to describe her music, kind of a pop alt rock with a dash of country. She recently released an EP called Nice Girl From The Suburbs. She has worked with producers Dave Cobb and Sturgill Simpson, pretty damn impressive, I say.

 Her set was quite good, I enjoyed it. I didn't realize that she played keyboards, she has a great voice and am a fan of her writing. Overall I thought she was excellent and would certainly go to see her again. Speaking of, she has a show happening Thursday October 16th at the Temple here in Edmonton.

 Next up was headliner Everclear. By the time Everclear came on the place had filled up a bit more, but still a smaller crowd. The band led by Art Alexakis on vocals and guitar opened with "So Much For The Afterglow" and then "Everything To Everyone", both from So Much For The Afterglow. Most of their set was made up of songs from said album and Sparkle And Fade which is celebrating it's 30th anniversary. Both those albums have stood the test of time, they sound great, live the songs sounded good as well, though I found it just didn't pack the punch Art once did, but then Alex is getting older too (63 years old), and found that he missed a lyric here and there during the show.

 I was surprised to hear them do the Van Morrison song "Brown Eyed Girl", I think this is the third band this summer I have heard cover a Van Morrison song, kind of weird. Everclear did a great rocking version of it. And of course the band closed with their biggest hit "Santa Monica". Good times!!!

Everclear Live at River Cree Casino April 12th 2024

  

 A couple of Friday's ago now my buddy Nazz and I went to see Everclear and Sister Hazel play The Venue out at River Cree Casino just on the outskirts of Edmonton. As you can see, I'm not to damn quick with my reviews. Oh well, it's not like I have a deadline or anything, and I kinda suck at writing reviews and my photography is terrible too, but I still do it and have fun with it. So without further ado I give you my two cents.

 Headlining the show was Everclear who got their start in Portland, Oregon in 1991, so ya they have been around for a while. this was my second time seeing them, first time was in 2001 when they played the Convention Centre here in Edmonton with openers Nickleback. So I was looking forward to this show, I never stopped listening to them as their music still stands the test of time. can't say that for a lot of bands.

 The venue was about half full for this show, so i'd guess about 1000 people. Art Alexakis and his latest version of Everclear came out rocking with a great 1,2,3 punch of "So Much For The Afterglow", "Everything To Everyone" and "Heroin Girl", holy shit what a great start. Though Art did sound a little rough around the edges, vocals not as strong as they once were, and missing a couple lyrics here and there, it was still a real good start. Those songs are just timeless, and the crowd were singing along word for word. Also on this evening, little did I realize that it was Art's 62nd birthday. So at that age and still rocking, you're allowed do be a little off. His backup band were great, I especially thought the drummer Brian Nolan was a monster on the drums. About three quarters of the way through the show, the band members and roadies brought out a birthday cake for Art which brought on an impromptu singing of Happy Birthday from the crowd. Something else I didn't know about Art was that in 2019 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. So to see him and his band still doing what they do is awesome.

 Other songs played that night that I still remember now after two weeks were "Heartspark Dollarsign", "Amphetamine", "Father Of Mine", "AM Radio" which I missed as I went for a piss and smoke (bummer) as I really like that song. And of course they played "Rockstar" and "Santa Monica". Closing out the show the band did the song "Molly's Lips" which I thought was a Nirvana song, only to learn it was originally done by The Vaselines. Learn something every day they say, right! All and all a great show by Everclear. Good times!!!

 Now the opening band Sister Hazel from Gainesville, Florida who I guess had a little popularity in the mid 90's. I remember the name but not the music, and now I know why. They are not my cup of tea whatsoever. I'll just leave it at that. I was totally surprised that this band still has all the original members, wow!

February 12th

 

It was February 12th 2001 that I was at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton and saw Everclear with openers Nickelback in concert. Everclear were on tour for their two albums they put out in 2000, those albums being Songs From An American Movie Vol.1: Learning How To Smile and Songs From An American Movie Vol.2: Good Time For A Bad Attitude.

In concert news... Everclear will be playing at River Cree Casino in Edmonton on Friday April 12th.

12 Years Ago Today...Feb.12th

It was twelve years ago today that I saw Everclear play the Conference Centre here in Edmonton with Nickleback opening. And ya Nickleback sucked back then too.

It was also six years ago today that I saw Emmylou Harris play at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton.
