May 11th

It was on May 11th, 2012 that I saw two shows in the same evening. Started the night seeing Van Halen, and after that headed to the Pawn Shop on Whyte Ave. in Edmonton in time to catch Vancouver band Carpenter play. Which was the only band I was interested in on the bill. A busy night, but fun!

Notice the misspelling of Carpenter on the concert ad.

Super Friendly Fest in Edmonton September 11th Day 2

Well after the fun I had at day one of Super Friednly Fest, I woke up nursing a hangover. Therefore I didn't get down to Union Hall until mid afternoon. I ended up going to day two by myself as Nazz was under the weather. After a few beers at home I got to the venue in time to catch the third band of the day which was Edmonton's Norell. I knew nothing about them before this day. I thought they were pretty damn good. Norell.
Next up was Drive By Punch another Edmonton band. This was my sixth time seeing them play live. They too put on a great show. Drive By Punch.
The next band up was the main reason I wanted to go to this festival. The band Carpenter from Vancouver haven't played Edmonton since 2013, so I was super excited about seeing them perform again. And they did not disappoint. A great that have been labeled as a farmcore band, which in itself is hilarious. Lead singer and guitar player Dan Sioui who is obsessed with John Mellencamp or so says their bio, but it is true as you can see by the t-shirt I bought at the show. Carpenter played an amazing show, and by the time the band hit the stage the venue was filling up nicely. Dan was sounded great and had lots of energy which the crowd fed off. I was suprised by how much the crowd were digging this band, They obviously have a great following in Edmonton. everyone was dancing and singing along. Just an awesome show and can't wait for the band to come back. This was my fourth time seeing them live. It was nice to talk with Dan after the show. Carpenter.
The Carpenter t-shirt I picked up at the show.
Next band up was Edmonton band Calling All Captains. I didn't stick around for their full set as I was starting to get a good buzz on again and with work on Monday I had to bail early. Had I known in advance that I was going to get guest list for the whole weekend I would have booked Monday off of work. But I didn't, therefore I had to leave early. Which was a drag as I would love to have hung around to see Moneen and Misery Signals. Calling All Captains.
What a great weekend of live music and hanging out with friends. Again, a huge thank you to JFK! Good times!!!

20 Years Ago Today...October 9th

It was twenty years ago today that I went to Moshfest here in Edmotnon at Northlands Agricom. Some of the bands on this bill were SNFU, Cadillac Tramps, Disciples Of Power, King Apparatus among many others.

As well it was three years ago today that I saw Vancouver band Carpenter play a free show at Filthy McNasty's here in Edmonton.

And it was a year ago today that I saw Bob Dylan with opener Mark Knopfler play Rexall Place in Edmonton.

Audio/Rocketry and Carpenter July 6th 2013

On Saturday July 6th my buddy Hurl and I went to the Pawn Shop here in Edmonton to catch Vancouver band Carpenter with locals Audio/Rocketry. There were two other local bands on the bill, which we missed, as we were having beers at home before the show.

This was my third time seeing Carpenter in concert and the best out of the three times. Looks like Carpenter has built up a good following in Edmonton as lead singer Dan Sioui was putting the microphone up over the crowd and letting the audience take over on vocals a few times during the performance. The crowd was really in to Carpenter. Lead singer Dan is always entertaining to watch perform with his high kicks and jumping around, and with Ryan Howlett also playing with the band on this tour, it gave Dan more time to concentrate on the vocals and do his awesome high kicks. The band sounded great. Another awesome show by Carpenter, and word is they will be back in September.

The last band of the evening was local 'folk/roots/punk' band Audio/Rocketry. This was my second time seeing them live and wow, they were even better then the first time I saw them. Audio/Rocketry sound like a gritty punk version of Mumford & Sons. Led by lead singer Joe Vickers who writes most of the lyrics, with Blair Drover on banjo and bassist Matt Murphy making up the core of the band, they played an hour some set that rocked, with some heavy toe tapping, fist pumping and shouting along to the words. From what I understand this was a home coming show as they had just come back from a tour of Europe. It wasn't hard to tell they are a lot tighter of a band and see to be a lot more confident in their performance. The band has a big following in Edmonton and it showed with everyone in the audience singing along and dancing and drinking a storm up. A great performance, well worth checking out and their latest album "Piloting A Vehicle Of Audible Expressions" is a great recording. Nice to see another local band that should be making waves in the music industry. A great night of music. Good times!!!

It was a year ago today that I saw Van Halen play Rexall Place in Edmonton.

Carpenter Live at The Pawn Shop May 11th 2012

So after bailing out of the Van Halen concert early Friday night, it was off to the Pawn Shop on Whyte Ave to catch Vancouver band Carpenter. If I had known that Carpenter would be playing the same night as Halen, I would never have bought the damn Van Halen ticket. But what's more fun then rushing out of one show and rushing to another. Two shows in one night is always fun.

Carpenter were opening for Calgary band Belvedere's reunion shows in Alberta on the weekend. I know nothing about Belvedere, and didn't really care to see them after hearing some of their music. But I wasn't going to miss Carpenter. This was my second time seeing Carpenter perform, but this time it was as a three piece with a different drummer. Which was fine, cause they still kicked major ass. Lead singer, guitar player and song writer Daniel Sioui put a lot of energy into his performance and sings with a lot of conviction. I was very impressed once again. The bass player and drummer, whom I am not sure of there names, sorry guys, also were very good too.

I need to thank my buddy Hurl for being so kind as to come pick up my drunk ass from the Halen show and then drop by Buzzard's to get him and get us all to the show in time. We couldn't have timed it any better. We walked up the stairs into the venue and Carpenter hit the stage, perfect timing that was.

Carpenter played about a 40 minute set that rocked all the way through. The crowd was eating it up too, with lots of moshing and singing along, a great crowd out for the show as well.

After the show, Daniel recognized me from a few years ago at my Bro's wedding in Vancouver and thanked Buzzard, Hurl and I for coming out to the show. He was also nice enough to throw me some free swag some Carpenter drum sticks, a plastic shooter glass and a beer cozie, which will get well used. I spent a few bucks and picked up their last album 'Sea To Sky' on vinyl, which is available through Gold Stock Records. Sure hope it's not another year and a half before I see them play again. Thanks for coming out this way Carpenter and hope to see you play again soon. Good times!!!

Some pics of Carpenter performing.

Free Carpenter swag.

Do yourself a favour and pick up some Carpenter music and see them live if you get the chance. They can be found on Facebook by clicking here.

I just noticed on the poster for this gig that they spelt Carpenter wrong, dumb asses.

Lyrics Of The Day Oct.29th (Carpenter)

"You don’t care what I’ve got to say, cause baby you don’t feel that way....
I stumble in but out of sight, it’s just another Friday night....
You’ve seen it all before, me passed out at your front door....
I’m slurring words just trying to say...."

Lyrics by Carpenter from the song "Just Another Friday Night" from the albem Sea To Sky (2010)

Carpenter In Concert 10/09/10

Yesterday afternoon Hurl and I made our way over to Filthy McNasty's on Whyte Ave. in Edmonton to see Vancouver band Carpenter in concert. It was an afternoon show which was a little different, but still a really good show. It was a free show which was also really nice, the place was packed when we got there, we caught the opening band called Aboutmusic, which I think has got to be the worst band name I have heard in a very long time. They were alright, but nothing special, the bar was packed for them, so I think they are a local band and had a lot friends out to the show. After them, the place thinned out a bit, but still a good crowd for Carpenter, considering there was absolutely no advertising for this show at all.

Carpenter came out and rocked the shit out of the place, very energetic and very loud, almost too loud for the venue, but nonetheless a great show. I ran into lead singer and songwriter Daniel Ryan Sioul when I first got there, he came up and shook my hand and thanked my me and my buddy for coming out to the show and supporting them. I had met Daniel in Vancouver at my brothers wedding in August, so it was nice to see he remembered me. A super nice guy and a great singer, songwriter and guitar player, the whole band was very tight sounding and nice guys. They did some songs from their excellent new album Sea To Sky including my favorite song on the album Long Hard Day, that was awesome. All and all a really good show and good time, wish I could have made it out to Leduc for the night show. I would give this show an 8 out of 10. Good times!!!
