Yay, a Saturday night show and with the Supersuckers and Scott H. Biram to boot. Not enough weekend shows so far this year. My buddies Buzzard, Cuz, Nazz, A-Bomb and I went to this show together at the Starlite Room. I do like the Supersuckers but the big draw for me at this gig was Scott H. Biram. A great double bill.
I'd never seen Scott H. Biram before so I was looking forward to seeing this Austin, Texas one man band. His style of music is a mix of punk and blues based rock n' roll. When Scott hit the stage, after his first song he mentioned to the crowd that he was having voice issues but was going to soldier on through, saying that whiskey was gonna help or at the least he'd get drunk. After saying that the next thing you know the crowd is buying him glasses of whiskey. His voice was a little rough but still sounded like I had expected. Scott was ripping it up on the guitar and singing at his best ability. By the end of his set he walked off the stage with still three glasses of whiskey. I really enjoyed his set.
Next up was Tuscon, Arizona's self proclaimed greatest rock n' roll band the Supersuckers. This would be my 6th time seeing them in concert. They always put on a fun rocking show and it had been twelve years since I last saw them. I was hoping to hear lots of their older tunes as I haven't bought a Supersuckers album since their 2014 album Get The Hell.
Nice to see that the three piece Supersuckers have kept the same line up since I last saw them with bassist/vocalist and only original member Eddie Spaghetti leading the way with Metal Marty still ripping it up on guitar and drummer Chris von Streicher keeping the beat.
The band hit the stage opening with "Born With A Tail" an oldie from their 1995 album The Sacrilicious Sounds of the Supersuckers, such an awesome album and great song to start the night. Other old songs played were "Coattail Rider" and "Ron's Got the Cocaine" from their debut 1992 album The Smoke Of Hell. Another old one was "Creepy Jackalope Eye". Sometimes it would take half the song to realize what the hell it was that they were playing because the mix was terrible, vocals weren't high enough and the overall sound was very muddy, which is unusual for the Starlite Room as the sound is usually really good. I was hoping to hear some songs from the album Must've Been High but they only played one song from that album "Roadworn And Weary". "Evil Powers Of Rock N' Roll" was also played which made me happy. But there were a shit load of songs played that I just wasn't familiar with. Metal Marty the guitarist played a couple of songs from his solo albums, again songs I wasn't familiar with. But watching him on guitar was a treat, he just makes it look so effortless. Eddie Spaghetti plays the bass more like a guitar than a bass and drummer Chris was an animal.
All and all it was an okay show, Scott H. Biram stole the show. As for the Supersuckers, they were good, sound was shitty and the song selection could have been a whole lot better. I was surprised by the small turnout for the Saturday show, maybe a couple hundred people. I think I am pretty much done going to see them in concert again, unless of course they come through town and play Must've Been High in it's entirety. Good times!!!
