Ryan Adams Live in Edmonton March 24th 2023

Another show that I almost didn't go to because of ticket prices, a hundred bucks to see Ryan Adams, a bit pricey I thought. But getting the chance to see Ryan Adams play a solo acoustic show at a church isn't something you get to see very often. This would be my third time seeing Ryan in concert. So I sucked it up and bought myself a ticket. Glad I did too, because this was a good show. The show was held at McDougall United Church a cool intimate show with great acoustics, even if you could here sirens through the walls of the place off and on during the show. Ryan played a three hour show with no intermission. A thirty plus song setlist with a big smattering of cover songs. He opened the show with the song "Oh My Sweet Carolina" from is debut album Heartbreaker. I believe he played another two or three songs from that album as well. Ryan covered a good portion of his albums but also did a lot of cover songs during this show which he had been doing through out this whole solo tour. I had been watching his setlists prior to this show and he was doing some interesting covers. he must have done at least eight cover songs during his three hour set, which I thought was kind of weird considering how many albums and songs he has out. At least three Neil Young songs, a Dylan song "If You See Her, Say Hello", a Springsteen song "Nebraska", an album that Ryan had recently released redoing the whole Nebraska album. He alos did a Stones song "Sympathy For The Devil". What really caught me by surprise was when he did the Slayer song "South Of Heaven". It took me a bit to realize it was that song. I heard the words and got thinking, no fucking way, is this really a Slayer song done acoustic and in a church to boot. Yup, sure was! Another cool cover was the Pixies song "Monkey Gone To Heaven". I didn't take many pictures at this show as during the first couple of songs a professional photographer at the back of the room was taking pictures when Ryan spotted him taking pictures and stopped mid song and berated the photographer for taking pictures. The guy had the credentials to be allowed to take the pictures, but Ryan asked him to stop and delete all the pictures he had taken. That was enough for me to not take too many pictures. Ryan wasn't very kind about how he handled the situation either. All and all this was a good show, was disappointed that I couoldn't have a beer at the show as there was no alcohol service at the show. Having known this before hand, I hid some beers outside the venue and stepped out a few times to down a quick beer. Good times!!! Ryan Adams.

Ryan Adams Live in Edmonton June 23rd 2017

Last Friday I went to the Ryan Adams show at the Jubilee Auditorium, this was my second time seeing Ryan in concert. Ryan Adams is currently on tour promoting his latest release called Prisoner which is an excellent album by the way.

Opening the show was Karen Elson who is an English model singer-songwriter and guitarist. I had never heard of here before, so after a search about her I found out that she was married to Jack White at one point. As for her opening set, in one word I would say BORING! I only lasted about three songs and had seen and heard enough. It was very angelic mellow music, wasn't for me that's for sure.

Next up was Ryan Adams and his Unknown Band. His two hour set was quite good, though I enjoyed his last show here in 2014 more, but that could be because it was my first time seeing him. Not that there was anything wrong with this show. The show started with some guy dressed up in a devil outfit introducing Ryan Adams in a distorted devil like voice, which was really weird. The devil dude later came out and played a little tambourine during one song. Ryan and his band touched on a lot of his music catalog opening with a new song from his Prisoner album "Do You Still Love Me?" followed up with "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)" from his debut album Heartbreaker, this was a great way to start the show, and then into "Gimme Something Good" from his self titled album from 2014. Overall I was quite impressed with the setlist for this show, as Ryan mixes up his shows every night which is cool. he did do one song that I had never heard before, a song called "Juli" which is a track that was released on a 7 inch box set of singles called End Of The World all from his Prisoner album.

At one point during the show someone in the first couple of rows sneezed which launched Ryan into an improvised tune about a light sneeze. Ryan has got a great sense of humour and this improvised song went on for a few minutes getting a good laugh from the audience. I believe it was during this song that Ryan took a shot at Metallica saying the bass was really low, kind of like the And...Justice For All album, again another chuckle from the crowd.

Ryan has been known to do the odd cover song during his shows and on this night he played the Oasis song "Wonderwall" which sounded great. They closed out the show with two great songs, that being "New York, New York" which is a song I was really hoping to hear and was starting to think he might not play it on this night, but he did, so that brought a smile to my face. They ended the night with another old song "Shakedown On 9th Street" from his debut album.

I really enjoyed the show. Good times!!!

Seven Inch Sunday (Pornography)

Today's seven inch single is from a band called Pornography which is a punk rock band featuring Ryan Adams on guitar and bass, also in the band is Leah Hennessey on vocals and Johnny T. Yerington on drums. This seven inch is titled 7 Minutes In Heaven and was released on Ryan Adams' label PAX AM Records in 2013. The single contains seven songs none of which run more then a minute if that. In all reality, it's really not that good, in my opinion anyways.

Last Thursday I went to the Ryan Adams and Butch Walker double bill here in Edmonton at the Winspear Centre. This was my first time seeing both artists. I knew nothing about Butch Walker, but once I found out he was opening, I did some research to learn about him. To my surprise Butch has been very active in the music scene for many years, not only as an artist playing in bands Marvelous 3 and South Gang and solo, he has also produced a many an album by such artists as Pete Yorn, Pink, Weezer, Avril Lavigne just to name a few. Butch Walker has also put out six solo albums with a new one called "Afraid Of Ghosts" that is due in February.

Butch's half hour set was quite good, the first two songs he did were on the piano, so it started a little slow, but he then switched to guitar which seemed to pick up the pace of his show. He did a couple of new songs, one of which was called Chrissie Hynde. He also told a great story about going to his very first concert which was with his Dad and was KISS on the Love Gun tour, a hilarious story. Butch closed out his set with Ryan Adams band backing him up, with Ryan on drums, the song that they performed was "Maybe It's Just Me". An awesome choice for an opener, I would love to see Butch Walker and his band play a headlining show. Hope to see Butch make his way up here again.

Next up was headliner Ryan Adams, Ryan is out touring to support is first album in four years his self titled release. This show started out interesting, before the show had even started a guy about six rows in front of me came to his seat double fisted with a beer in each hand and holding them over his head, yelling at the top of his lungs, lets fucking party. This guy was obviously drunk, and his voice sure did carry, especially in a venue like the Winspear Centre. Just before Ryan hit the stage, this guy goes right to the front of the stage and is screaming like mad, telling everyone to stand up and blah blah blah. Didn't take long before security was on this guy, trying to escort him out, that is when Ryan Adams hit the stage and saw what was going on. Ryan went on to tell security to leave him alone, as he was only having a good time and this is a rock n' roll show, yes we are here to party. So thanks to Ryan Adams, this guy was able to stay for the show, had to go back to his seat, but was still allowed to stay. Kudos to you Ryan.

Ryan Adams and his new band The Shining opened the show with the song "Gimme Something Good" from his newest album. Through out his two hour show he played almost the whole new album, but sprinkled the rest of the show with some older material, one song "Why Do They Leave" from his debut album that came out in 2000. Also doing one song from his 2001 album Gold, that song being "New York, New York". I would like to have heard a few more songs from that album, but that is a minor complaint considering the vast catalog of music he has to choose from.

Something else I noticed about this show was how vocal the audience was, there was lots of banter between the audience and Ryan Adams through out the entire concert. Ryan was really good about it, dealing with it with his dry sense of humour, he was actually quite funny. With the banter between the audience and Ryan, he did two improvised songs that brought a few laughs. All and all this was a great show, even better then I was expecting. Good times!!!
