November 27th

  My ticket stub from the Barney Bentall & The Grand Cariboo Opry show I saw at the Myer Horowitz Theatre in Edmonton on November 27th, 2014. This was a touring festival that Barney Bentall used to do every winter before Xmas. Raising money for different charities. The 2014 version in Edmonton featured Barney Bentall, Matt Masters, Leeroy Stagger, Dustin Bentall, Ridley Bent and Kendel Carson.

 My ticket stub from the December 15th, 2013 Highway 3 Roots Revue show put on by the Northern Lights Folk Club at Queen Alexandra Community Hall in Edmonton. The Highway 3 Roots Revue consisted of Leeroy Stagger, John Wort Hannam and Dave McCann. Such a great show with all of them trading off songs for two hours. Would be awesome to see these three perform together again. This was a rescheduled show.

 I made one more trip to downtown Edmonton with my buddy Buzzard to see Leeroy Stagger perform at the Taste Of Edmonton Festival. This would be my 16th time seeing Leeroy in concert and first time in 4 years.

 I always enjoy seeing Leeroy in concert and again he was great. Leeroy was joined by his longtime band member Rylan Moranz on guitar and mandolin. Ryland himself is an accomplished musician and songwriter who also puts out his own music besides backing up Leeroy.

Leeroy who is now based on Vancouver Island therefore not playing out this way quite as often, so it was great to see him do a one off show here in Edmonton for this festival. With 11 albums out, Leeroy has a lot of material to draw from. His hour long show was excellent, playing music covering a good part of his career. After his performance my buddy Buzzard and I got the chance to have a quick chat with him, which is always nice. If you get the chance to see Leeroy play, I highly recommend checking him out. I know these aren't much of a concert review, but I am so far behind on reviews that it is hard to wrote a review six months after the fact. I'm hoping I can do a better job in the future. Having said that, I suck at writing. So it's more about showing a few pictures from the shows more then anything. Good times!!!

Leeroy Stagger Live in Edmonton June 15th 2019

The next show I saw was the Highlandia Fest which was held in the Highlands neighbourhood at Henry Martell Park. This was basically a block party for the hood. Apparently this festival has been happening for years. but this was the first I had heard of it. They had live music playing all day and night until 11pm. My buddy Buzzard and I only wanted to see the last two bands Altameda and Leeroy Stagger. Talk about two great bands to close out the festival. we weren't sure what to expect when we got there. I didn't think they would be serving beer and I was right on that, but after scoping the place out we noticed that people were just sitting around on the grass drinking cans of beer or bottles of wine that they had brought themselves. Lucky for us we got there early enough that we booked it to the closest liquor store and picked some beers up. what a cool relaxed festival, everyone was well behaved just enjoying the tunes and having a few beers. I wish there were more events like this in the city. No cops harassing people, just people with their kids enjoying beautiful night out.

So after fetching ourselves some beers we made ourselves comfy on the grass just before Edmonton band Altameda started. This would be my 11th time seeing Altameda in concert. Probably my favorite Edmonton band these days. Like every other time I have seen them in concert they were great. Maybe a little tamer then usual at this show, but still really good. They closed out their hour long set with a fun cover of Paul McCartney's song "Coming Up". Overall a good set.

Headlining the evening was Leeroy Stagger with the Rebeltone Sound. This would be my 15th time seeing Leeroy in concert. This show was the last date of his Me And The Mountain Tour, which is also the name of his latest album that was just released in mid May. This is the first of two albums he is releasing this year. And a great album it is. The show on this night was Leeroy with his band doing an all acoustic set.

Most of Leeroy's set was made up from songs from the Me And The Mountain album, such songs as the title song, "Caught In The Middle", "Beauty In This World", "Open Up Your Heart" and "Fire & Fury", the new songs sounded great. Leeroy also played a couple of older songs from his Love Versus album "I Want It All" and "Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone" as well as "Poison The Well" from his 2015 album Dream It All Away. Leeroy also pulled out an old Joe Strummer song called "Johnny Appleseed" mentioning that it was probably his favorite song. As I had mentioned earlier Leeroy has another album coming out this fall, he played a song from it called "Leonard Cohen Is Dead". His our long set was excellent and went by far too fast. All and all a fun little festival with two great bands to close it out. Good times!!!

Leeroy Stagger Live in Edmonton Sept.14th 2018

Last Friday night my buddy Buzzard and I went to the Leeroy Stagger concert at the Station On Jasper (formerly the Needle Vinyl Tavern). This was the first show I have seen at the venue since it has reopened under the new name, nothing has changed about the set up of the venue.

This would be the 14th time seeing Leeroy in concert. Opening the show was singer/songwriter Erin Kay whom makes Edmonton home. Erin played a solo set of music in the folk genre. She has a nice voice for her soft melody kind of music. I'd be interested in seeing her with her full band sometime. Overall she was pretty good.

Headliner was singer/songwriter Leeroy Stagger who is based in Lethbridge, although these days he and his band the Rebeltone Sounds have been living on the road, having been touring strong for well over a year now. Stagger sounded great and his band was super tight. I was really looking forward to this show as I haven't seen them play since July of last year.

They opened the show with the single "I Want It All" from his Love Versus album that came out in the spring of 2017. Actually the first four songs of the set ran in the same running order as on the album. Then it was time for a song called "Poison The Well" from his Dream It All Away album. Leeroy and his band even played four new songs and a couple of covers on this night. One of the new songs was called "Searchlight". Leeroy went on to mention that the summer of 2018 will always be remembered as the summer he fell in love with the Grateful Dead, they then went on to do a Dead song called "I Know You Rider" which sounded amazing that segued in to his song "Run Rabbit Run" which has a very Grateful Dead vibe top it.

Leeroy then brought out Erin Kay to do two new songs, "Caught In The Middle" and "Mother". Another new song the band did was called "Open Up Your Heart", all the new songs sounded great and am really looking forward to a new album. For the encore they did a Replacements song "I Can't Hardly Wait" that surprised me to see him do two covers. And for the closing song of the night they played "Dirty Windshields" from his Radiant Land album, that song is also the name of Leeroy's weekly radio show he does on Saturdays on CKUA. I was surprised that the place was only half full on a Friday night for a great artist like Leeroy Stagger, but then there was no advertising done for this show, no ads in the local weekly, or postering done. Word of mouth is great but you need to advertise too.

Interstellar Rodeo Day Two July 22nd 2017

After a good night of rest and feeling revived it was off to day two of Interstellar. This time Janis and Erin came with me like they have the past four years, always the Saturday show for them.

We got there early as we wanted to see all that we could. The day started with a band from Winnipeg called Begonia, another band I had never heard of before. Begonia is lead by Alexa Dirks on vocals, their music is a mix of synth, gospel and folk. I have to say, I wasn't all that big on it.

Next up was Parker Millsap an artist from Oklahoma. I had heard a few of his songs on CKUA and recently had seen an episode of Austin City Limits that had Parker on it. I was looking forward to his set as I was really starting to dig his music.

Well, I wasn't disappointed at all with his hour long set. His mix of Americana music, rock n' roll with soulful lyrics and singing and watching him and his awesome band look like they were having fun up on stage made it a great performance. What impressed me most was the range in Parker's voice, at times a whisper and then all out rock n' roll. The man can sing, very very impressed. I'll be picking up his music and following this artist. Great stuff.

The next band up was The Suffers out of Houston, Texas. Their music I would describe as a mix of soul, some funk and Cajun. They were entertaining and had the crowd up and dancing along. Lead singer Kam Franklin had an awesome voice and really knew how to work the crowd. I also really enjoyed the guitar playing of Kevin Bernier and hell he had a cool looking green jean jacket too. All and all I thought they were pretty damn good.

Up next was Canadian folk singer/songwriter Basia Bulat out of Toronto, Ontario. While I have heard some of her music on CKUA I have never really been a fan of her tunes. Now after seeing her perform live, I have a lot more respect for her music. She was definitely better live then on record in my opinion. She has a great voice and band. Again I was impressed with an artist I didn't think I was going to like.

I missed some of the in between acts like Christine Fellows and Ken Stead as guy needs to eat and step out for a smoke once in a while.

The next main stage act was Winnipeg's John K. Samson and the Winter Wheat. John is a former member of hardcore band Propagandhi and indie rockers The Weakerthans. I wish I knew more about both his former bands but I didn't really follow either. Nonetheless, his new band The Winter Wheat were quite good. The crowd was certainly into them. I enjoyed his set but like I say I wish I was more familiar with his music.

The next act up was Leeroy Stagger doing an in between act set. Why he wasn't booked for the main stage I don't understand, but at least he got to play Interstellar. I've been a big fan of Leeroy for years now and this would be my thirteenth time seeing him play. Leeroy's half hour set was excellent with a lot of people checking it out and getting a great response from the audience. Really enjoyed his set.

The last act of day two was Toronto musician Serena Ryder. Her music is kind of all over the place with roots, country, folk and rock influences. She knows how to command the stage and crowd. She was very entertaining and had the audience in the palm of her hands through out her performance. I'm not the biggest fan of her but do have to say she put on a pretty good show.

All and all it was a great day of music, eats, drinks and hanging with good people. Good times!!!
