Van Morrison At Edmonton Folk Fest 08/04/10

Wednesday night I made my way to the Edmonton Folk Fest for the first time since 199o. The line up they have for this year is quite good so Buzzard and I decided to venture to the fest for a few of the bands this weekend. It all started on Wednesday night with Van Morrison. This was my third time seeing him in concert. The weather was perfect for a night of sitting on the hill at Gallagher Park in the Edmonton river valley.

We missed the opener, which was Bobby "Blue" Bland. But made it there in time for Van. You have to get to the site some early if you plan on getting a decent seat that's for sure. As there were about 12-15,000 people on the hill. We ended up sitting at the very top of the hill, which sucked as you couldn't see a damn thing, and the 3 screens they had set up for people to see the show, only one of them were working, go figure. We eventually did move down next to the stage, view was blocked a bit by the stage set up, but beat the hell out of sitting at the top and seeing nothing. Oh ya, also no beer gardens open on this night, what's up with that? The sound was excellent up on the hill, you just couldn't see anything. I'm thinking, I am better off sitting in the bushes outside the fenced area for free and listening to the music. I have done this a few times and have always had a good time. Beer is cheap, as you pack your own, you can smoke all you want and it's easy to leave when all is said and done, very little hassles and no rules. I like that!!!

Anyways, Van Morrison put on a stellar show, his voice sounded good, back up band was good, good selection of songs, caught me by surprise when two songs into his hour and half set he played his hit Brown Eyed Girl, other notable songs, they are all good, but these are the ones most people know. He played, Into The Mystic,Moondance and closed the night out with the song Gloria which had the crowd up and dancing finally. Van Morrison didn't acknowledge the crowd once through out the whole evening, he comes off as kind of ignorant or a grumpy bastard. I would give this show a 7 out of 10.

Next up... Levon Helm (of The Band) Friday night. I am really looking forward to seeing Levon in concert.
