Mike McDonald Live June 29th 2013

Time to catch up on a few shows I have seen in the past couple of weeks. First off, on Saturday June 29th I made my way down to Sir Winston Churchill Park here in Edmonton to see Mike McDonald of Jr. Gone Wild play an acoustic solo set as part of The Works Festival. Mike was the first act of the day, starting at noon hour, so there wasn't as big of audience as I was hoping, but nonetheless there were a few of us out for the show on this beautiful day. Those that did come out for the show were wearing their controversial Jr. Gone Wild t-shirts that sports the Alberta Coat of Arms emblem. To read more about this controversy click here.

Mike played an hour set of lots of songs I hadn't heard before, including at least one from his solo project The Mike McDonald Band (Is This Thing On?) that came out in 1999. The song from that album that I recognized is called "The Longest Song In The Universe" which sounded great, despite Mike saying he had noon hour voice. This was my second time seeing Mike play an acoustic set, and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the hour long set.

Here are a few pictures and a video I took at the show.

In concert news...Mike McDonald's band Jr. Gone Wild will be playing a few shows here in Edmonton in two weeks. Starting with the opening slot of the Interstellar Rodeo Festival at the Hawrelak Amphitheatre on Friday July 26th and then on Sunday July 28th Jr. Gone Wild with Corb Lund the Fuzz Kings and Ann Vriend will be playing the Starlite Room as part of the Edmonton for Southern Alberta Benefit Concert, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Alberta Flood Funds. Nice to see these Alberta class acts helping out the southern Albertans that were hit with a devastating flood the weekend of June 21st. A worthy cause and an awesome line-up.

Tickets for this show are available online at Ticketfly and at Permanent Records (8126 Gateway Blvd).
