On Saturday here in Edmonton the neighbourhood (Whyte Avenue) was super busy and colourful with the Pride Parade happening down the ave. A beautiful day for it as well with clear sunny sky and in the mid twenties. With all this going on the Commercial Hotel which houses the bar Blues On Whyte set up there parking lot as a beer gardens for the day with a stage set up and hosting live music from 1pm - 7pm. A great idea and something they should do more often. They always do it for the Canada Day street party, so this was new for them and seemed to go over quite well.
I managed to get down to the beer gardens to catch the last band of the afternoon perform. That band being the country/rock/punkers Dolly Rotten play. This was my third time seeing this local band, but the first time in over a year as it seems the band has been laying low. Now after seeing them again, looks like there have been a few band member changes. The band is still led by the lead attraction of singer Lacy, not only does she look amazing she can sing wicked too. From a whisper to a scream to stage presence, she has it going for herself that's for sure.
Dolly Rotten opened with the Dolly Parton song "Jolene" which sounded alright, they actually did a few cover songs on this day including a Fleetwood Mac song too. Mixed in the covers were some originals from their debut album "Coming For You" including playing the title song, a song in which there are some good time changes and some great vocal work by Lacy. Other songs played were "Paint My Collar Blue", "Working Class SOB" and "Drive Me To Drink".
All and all it was a pretty good hour long set, the crowd seemed to enjoy them and nice to see the Commercial take a chance booking a band that isn't in the blues genre. Good times!!!
Dolly Rotten.
In concert news...Dolly Rotten will be playing the Needle Vinyl Tavern this Saturday June 11th.
